Narrows gear and river checklist

The Narrows is the Virgin River. Most of the hike is wading, so pack for cold water and slick rock, separate from your dry-trail day pack. Read The Narrows and current conditions the morning you go: the route closes above 150 cubic feet per second and during a Flash Flood Warning.

Shoes

NPS says closed-toe shoes are essential and calls hiking boots with good ankle support the best choice. Sandals, Crocs, and bare feet are not appropriate. If you prefer a shoe that drains, choose a closed-toe one: see the river shoe picks.

Socks and layers

Avoid cotton, which does not insulate when wet. Wear wool or synthetic layers. River water is colder than the air: NPS lists about 56–68°F in summer, 41–53°F in spring and fall, and 38–45°F in winter. In early spring and late fall NPS says neoprene socks, pants, bibs, or a wetsuit may be necessary, and in winter a wetsuit or drysuit. Bring an extra warm layer for each person, even in summer. Picks: neoprene socks and quick-dry layers.

A sturdy stick

NPS highly recommends hiking poles or a sturdy stick for balance and to check depth. Keep it inside the shuttle. Picks: trekking poles.

Dry bag

Put your extra layer and anything that must stay dry in a waterproof bag, with small resealable bags for a phone and keys. Picks: dry bags.

Also: carry water from the Temple of Sinawava (do not drink the river) and use the restroom there. There is none in The Narrows. Full list: NPS Narrows safety.
